Scriptures: I notice that when I start the day by reading the scriptures, I my heart is light and I carry that happiness with me all day long.

I love the scriptures.  When I read the scriptures ( ie the Bible or Book of Mormon) the teachings of the Lord and His Prophets ring true in my heart.  I feel a sense of their goodness, rightness and completeness.  I myself feel elevated, like I can be more loving.  I feel refreshed, like my perspective on life has improved.  I feel like I can be a better version of myself.

Reading the scriptures makes my heart swell with happiness and peace.  In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we often refer to this as feeling the spirit.  It is an enlightenment.  It is a feeling of conviction.  A sense of something intangible but real.

Here is an example: Christ said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:28-30).

{FYI: A yoke is a harness that usually couples two horses or oxen together. Picture two horses pulling a carriage.  The two animals are united with a yolk, bearing the same burden as one.}

I feel a profound sense of love from that scripture.  He is there for us.  He loves us and is interested in us.  He offers peace and healing to everyone.  I truly believe that Christ is willing to help us bear our burdens—whatever they may be. He has said that He will help us in a real way, not in an abstract way.  He is willing to work beside us, as He alludes to with the reference of the yoke.  He wants to help us with the stuff of life, our responsibilities, our load of cares.  What a wonderful, enlightening gift it is to have these precious words of the Lord recorded in scripture.  Like a friend, this scripture is always there for me to turn to and find a reminder of the help and comfort He offers.

I know the scriptures are the words of God because the scriptures explain the truth and all truth comes from God. I think you can’t help but be affected by the truth that the scriptures relate.  Hearing the words of the Lord changes you.

Life gets confusing.  The scriptures remind me of what’s really important: Love, compassion, service, and improvement.  I notice that when I start the day by reading the scriptures, my heart is light and I carry that happiness with me all day long.  I become more like the person I want to be when I read the scriptures.
